Vince Coates

When I paint and sculpt I am focused on process. I am impulsive and reactive when applying paint and adding images. Play and having fun are important elements that I bring to my art. I like to use bold and vibrant colors.

I am a big believer in doing my art first and then thinking about what I have created afterward.

I hope you can see both passion and playfulness in my work.

Watercolor and acrylics are my favorite medium for my paintings. I also enjoy creating sculpture, ceramics and collage.

I took my first art class at Frederick Community College in 1998, although I had been painting informally for many years. I was surprised at how motivated and excited I became with this first formal experience. The class was Intro to Sculpture taught by Jeff Smith.

At age 38, I became hooked by sculpture and later with painting and the arts in general. Although I have other academic degrees, I persevered and completed an A.A. Degree in Art from FCC in the Spring of 2003. I am presently working towards an A.A. Degree in Physical Education and towards a B.A. Degree in Art.

I have also taken classes at the Delaplaine Visual Arts and Education Center, and studied under abstract painter Ed Ramsburg, who has inspired and influenced my journey as an artist. Other artists at FCC who have had a special impact on my work have been Irina Smulevitch and Dave Moreland.
