Taylor Matthews

Raised in the village of lower Manhattan, Taylor Matthews always gravitated towards the arts as a child.  As he grew, architecture and technical drawing became his passion which evolved in to a very diverse background in interior and architectural design.  As the owner of his own design firm, he has been recognized in the Washington DC region as well as nationally with multiple awards and publishing for design excellence.

Matthews’ most recent endeavor “Light in Motion” began towards the end of 2009 with the discovery of a remarkably innovative way to capture light on film.  “My love for light and shadow and how they influence structure and form, has become the subject of my project where the motion, shape and color of light are captured as only the camera can”, Matthews says.
 
Matthews’s philosophy is based on the fact that photography itself is the art of capturing and controlling light.  “It is only natural that by making light the subject itself that the images which emerge are so uniquely interesting and beautiful. The process can best be described as painting with light” he explains.  Other than the occasional crop for compositional improvement, each completed image is left in its original state without any retouch or digital enhancement.
 
Taylor Matthews’s passion for the arts also includes painting, sketching, wood carving and almost all things related to design.  He currently resides west of Washington, DC in Frederick, Maryland with his wife and two sons.
